I was fortune enough to stay at the private Ngua lodge within the Madikwe Game Reserve and what a truly amazing experience it was. Not my first time at the lodge however one of the night drives with Peit made it my best African adventure to date.
We headed off already having seen lion and elephant the previous days so we were in no rush. The drive started out at Cloe ( Elephant ) dam where we saw a Rhino mother and her calf, leaving the dam we spotted a African wild cat. We came across some lions and an amazing sight, about 19 elephants scaling down one of the rocky hill sides – you would never say such a massive animal could be so agile.
We spotted a few game vehicles that were not meant to be in our area as they still had a 1 hour drive back to their lodges in the west and would miss dinner. They were scouring the side of a hill with their spotlights and could only be looking for leopard. So we headed off to the vicinity and on the way we came across a spotted hyena, then amazingly 3 minutes after.. a brown hyena. Next, 2 wild dogs – a rare sight!
Right now your thinking it couldn’t get better..
One of the ranges at the lodge radio’d in to say he had spotted a mahona ( African slang for HUGE ) leopard 30 meters from the lodge! We raced back and were lucky enough to view the majestic animal for roughly 4 minutes before it slipped over the hill. Yes, we had a sleepless night
A night I will never forget.
